Today is our 10th Anniversary and it started at 4:30am with the village rooster crowing outside our door . It took him 1 ½ hours to rouse the sun, however.
We dressed, splashed water on our faces, brushed our teeth and collected our meager belongings. Everything must fit into the saddlebags. After a breakfast of tea and oatmeal we climbed aboard our noble steeds for the five hour ride back to Malealea where we reserved an ‘en suite’ room for the night. We took a different route back, passing through some more prosperous villages. Still no electricity or plumbing but there was a dirt road so they could import some luxuries.
We’re back at the Lodge, showered and ready for dinner, drinks and a chance to rest our aching bottoms. Riding takes some of the strain off backpacking but there are trade-offs!
