Yorkshire, Brodsworth Hall

UNITED KINGDOM | Wednesday, 9 July 2014 | Views [152]

We are now at my sister Sue and Graham's in Yorkshire. The train took 90 minutes non stop to Doncaster and cost only 9 pounds each. We spent today at Brodsworth Hall which is a historic country family estate dating from the 18th century and very reminiscent of Downton Abbey, but showing the signs of the decay forshadowed at Downton. It is easy to imagine the life which was once enjoyed there from the photos and paintings exhibited.  It is being lovingly restored by English Heritage, but was neglected by the last family member, who lived there in her old age with only a couple of servants and limited funds, and very little heating. The gardens are formally laid out and immaculately kept now with remarkable topiary everywhere. A beautiful summer day for us in Yorkshire.
