Nullabore Plain

So today we really did put some kilometers on the car – we're now 730 kms closer to home.

We hit the road at 7:00am and as we were leaving Cape Le Grand we were accompanied by two kangaroos along the way. They were on the road so Jim slowed down to let them pass but they proceeded to hope along at a slow pace for another few hundred metres. They would begin to swerve off the road then bounce along back onto the road ... Cute but ditzy.

We travelled to the town of Norseman then hit the Eyre Hwy to begin our crossing of the Nullabore Plain. The trip began with Malley bush and ended in the dry plains of low lying scrub with the occasional trees. Petrol is getting expensive with the fuel cost for the day totaling $240 - the most expensive was $1.66 per litre. Along the way we saw spectacular large eagles and emus and of course the ever present kangaroos.

After lunch we headed, gaily forward, along the longest straightest stretch of road in Australia – 146 kms of never ending straightness. We also crossed our first time zone in Australia putting our clocks ahead 45 mins.

Tonight we pulled off the side of the road and set up camp in a flat bit of land and were entertained with a spectacular orange full moon and twinkling stars.

Friday 4th December

Fowlers Bay SA

Anther 644 kms today pushing ever closer towards home. In the past two days we have gone twice the distance of the last three weeks.

By lunchtime we had hit the head of the Great Australian Bight. A dramatic coastline with plunging cliffs and huge sand dunes. Popped into the old telegraph station at Eucla just before we crossed the border into South Australia. Yep, after 22 days on the road we have finally left the West. We also crossed our second time change for the country.

Tonight we again had a bush camp. We headed for a little town called Fowler's Bay but couldn't find the camping area so we continued on the road and just turned off on a track and drove for a few minutes finding ourselves a perfect spot to stop for the night. Provisions are getting low so we had some yummy leftovers for dinner and again were entertained by the spectacular (shooting) stars above.
