Deepest Darkest Jungle

Deepest Darkest Jungle

Friday 14th August

The Amazon

Our day began with a 3 hour trek into the rain forest. Here our guides explained how we could survive in the jungle without western implements. How to make fire, trap and hunt for food, how to get water and how to make a shelter. With all of this new-found knowledge, we headed back to the big canoe for a sumptuous lunch then a nap in the stateroom during the heat of the day.

This afternoon was another trip up the waterways where we saw river dolphins, monkeys, exotic birds, frogs, toucans, night hawks, vultures and the mean looking eyes of a cayman sitting on the water's edge.

After dinner we headed off for another night of spotlighting. Nothing major to be seen tonight but the highlight was when we turned off the lights and floated looking at the stars. The clarity of the night sky reminded us of what we saw in the centre of Australia (including the southern cross)
