Cruising the Rhine River

GERMANY | Thursday, 8 June 2006 | Views [477]

Took a cruise yesterday up the Rhine River from Bingen (where we are staying) to Koblenz. The stretch of river is a UNESCO world heritage site and I could see why. Some of the best scenery I have ever seen in my life. Steep hills on either side quite often terraced for growing grapes for wine making. Little towns dotted along the river either side and plenty of castles perched on rocky outcrops along the way. It was great to just sit back, down a few cold ones and take in the sights. Ended up getting sunburnt for it though! Had lunch in Koblenz at the end of the trip and caught the train back to Bingen. Koblenz is a females paradise. Shopping to be done everywhere!

The day before we had caught a boat over the other side of the river from where we are (cannot remember its name at the moment) and jumped on a chair lift to take us to the top of the hillside where there is a massive warrior like statue. Again, stunning views. I will upload photo's shortly, promise!

Every shop here from chemists to jewellery stores have incorporated World Cup themes into their shop displays. Things are also pretty expensive here. The train back from Koblenz to Bingen was 10 Euro which, with the current exhange rates, is nearly $20 Australian. The trip only lasted about 40 minutes.

Forgot to mention in my last blog that we were promptly removed from 1st class seats on the train from Frankfurt to Bingen once the ticket inspector came through. He was cool about it though.
