Up early and on the buses to visit Nuremburg, where Hitler held his Nazi rallies and the Nurmeburg Tribunals were held. The tour was by bus and it was disappointing that we did not have the opportunity to stop and take photos. It was so interesting to see the extravagance of the man, the massive buildings he had built and a “stadium” based on the coliseum in Rome that was never finished. The Zeppelin field was most interesting where Hitler held his rallies and the podium he had built to stand on and deliver his speeches. We drove past where the Nuremburg Tribunals were held but once again we didn’t stop for photos. We bought a postcard book of Nuremburg, just so we made sure we got it all.
Off the bus we visited the city wall and the old medieval castle. We had an interesting walk through this area and then into town for about an hour of free time. We did some shopping, bought some beautiful cherries and strawberries and then it was back to the beautiful fountain, which was all wrapped up and in scaffolding, so we couldn’t see it. We watched the clock chime 12 noon and the mechanical activities it performed and then it was back on the bus and back to the boat.
This afternoon we had a presentation all about the Danube Canal and the locks. We will travel through the next three lock and be raised 25 metres each time until we reach the highest point on a European River this evening. A nice relaxing afternoon and then another fantastic dinner. We reached the highest point about 8.45pm and now we are heading through locks that are lowering us down again. It is quite amazing to think that they have constructed this canal to join the Main River and the Danube and that now Cruise ships can travel through here. The increase they expected in barge and industrial travel has not happened but tourism has!
