So, as you know from mi's last story, we are here at St. Paul's KAASO school here in Kabira, Uganda. The school is wonderful and is serving 600 completely gorgeous children of elementary school age -- most or all orphaned by AIDS. Dominic and Rose are incredibly generous people who have devoted their lives to these children. They work so hard with so, so, SO little. Can you imagine trying to teach 80 children at a time in cramped rooms with no electricity and no sound barrier from the other classrooms with few teaching materials to use except a chalkboard? That is the reality here. Even more worrisome is that the children are maintained on a diet in which cornmeal products are a staple -- and the cost of cornmeal is skyrocketing in Africa due to shortages. They are facing a potential crisis in the months ahead.
KAASO has a long connection with the Rotary Club in Kampala, Uganda -- and through other Rotary Clubs internationally they have been able to get some of the basics they need to get by, like a water filtration system, a truck, etc. We are wondering if any of you are or know of anyone connected with a Rotary Club in the US that may be interested in helping a great project doing such important work here in Uganda. Please let us know if you do, either in a comment on this website or in an email.
And if you have any desire to make personal donations, I think the best way to do this would be to send a check to my parents -- they can tell me the amount -- and we can make the donation directly. (Email me if you need the address.)We can guarantee any donations will be well-used here. We also ask for your thoughts, good-wishes, and blessings during our time here. It is sure to be a month with a lot of learning. Love to you all.
