Having been dominated by China for around 1000 years, the Vietnamese practice Mahayana Buddhism ("The Great Vehicle") --with its focus on compassion, here personified by the female deity Quan Yin. This is a different form of Buddhism than the Therevada ("The Way of the Elders") we watched being practiced in Cambodia and Laos.
