Enjoying all things with M in them, Magnums...Magners...Mokes - all on Magnetic Island

The 4 of us decided to see in the New Year on Magnetic Island.  So we made our way north, and arrived on the island on Monday.  Unfortunatly for us the place we stayed in wasn't really up to much and we had a couple of days to kill before the NYE party.  First day it rained as up here we have entered the rainy season, so we drank magners and ate magnums.  The following day we hired Maggie the Moke.  This is a little pink barbie car which has no doors, windows or roof.  Pretty leathal really but great fun to drive.  Chris decided perhaps the pink girly car wasn't for him, so he hired a motor bike for the day.

Magnetic Island.....not a big island at all.  We travlled to the northern bays in under 10 minutes, had lunch at Picnic Bay which seemed the most appropriate choice.

We had Maggie the Moke for 24 hours so we could escape the horrible accommodation and go out for dinner somewhere.  Only thing was, it rained..... a lot.  But we were not defeated by the rain, and detirmined not to give our accommodation any additional money for dinner, we lifted off the rain cover, jumped in and got drenched as we looked for somewhere to have dinner.  We found a pizza place with the rudest woman ever working there.  We had to wait a long time for the pizzas to arrive but it was worth the wait.

NYE approached, we chilled out all day after popping to the small harbour area in the morning for a change of scenery, and waited for a local bus we thought would never arrive.  Head kandi was the big party on Magnetic Island based at our accommodation.  Plus point would be that we wouldn't have far to stagger home.  But I was surprised that it was all happening right outside our dorm room!  We still had booze left over from Christmas so we sat in our dorm room for quite a lot of the night, hiding it from security that spot checked every room.  We saw the New Year in out of the room, amongst the 2,000 people that were there.  Took a walk along the beach where I lost one flip flop and gained someone elses, wondered why I couldn't walk properly (managed to find my flip flop in the morning on the beach, bonus, I only bought them 3 days beforehand!).  The party went on till about 5am, I think I must have been out for the count by 2am!  Oh dear.  Liz I think was in bed before 2am, having banged her head on something and waking up on the beach!  What a start to 2009!

We left the following morning having decided not to stay New Year Day night, so it meant lugging our bags, still dressed from the night before, to get to the Marina to get the boat in the morning.  I'm glad it was just a short boat trip.  Lovely Fran from Townsville came to collect us and take us back to her lovely guesthouse, where we slept, ate and chilled out all day.

Happy 2009!
