Lots of layers and crampons, Franz Josef

UNITED KINGDOM | Friday, 31 October 2008 | Views [405]

The best way to see the glacier would have been to take a helicopter ride and explore it from great heights.  However, backpackers budget doesn't really stretch that far so we did a half day glacier walk.

Describing it as a walk makes it sound quite mild, it was a trek.  We got kitted out in coats, boots etc and given crampons to hold for when we started climbing on the ice.  We were advised to layer up so knowing how cold I get I took it to the extreme and had 5 layers on, even I was too warm once we started going!!

It was a great thing to do as it will probably be the only glacier I will ever climb.  The sun came out as we reached the top and great views could be seen.
