Thursday 11th August 11, Big wave comp. Pico Alto

We look with great astonishment at the sheer size of the gigantic wave rolling towards us called Pico Alto. There is nothing small about it though. The tiny figures of the surfers on the waves makes it look like they are small puppets on strings.

We are at the big wave world competition sponsored by Billabong and it´s great to see all these amazing surfers from all over the world compete. They get jetski´s out as the paddle is way to far and it´s a tricky business surfing waves this size of 15 meters plus, the two ambulances standing at the ready remind us off this. The atmosphere is really good. not so many people are here though as you would expect for a big international event like this. But the again, it´s only organised very last minute as they look at the swell charts and then plan it. The event takes the whole day as they have different heats to qualify for the semi finals and then the final. The winner is Peter Mel,on of the Maverick boys from the USA, beating Ben Wilkinson by a heartbeat as he was the one who dominated the contest during the last heat.

It´s great to see them on the stages with their boards, smiling broadly, soaked in champagne. And such a coincidence that we are here, just when they have this event. We are some lucky people.

On friday we are heading up to Lima and then we will head for Equador and the Galapagos Islands. Hopefully catch some sunshine and more good waves.
