The two sons of Vera Foteva look at their hero mother with sadness, acknowledging her importance both as a national figure and as a great person.

As part of the tradition, people hold lit candles during the funeral ceremony, carefully keeping them from being blown out, until they burn on their own. Candles symbolize the soul of the dead and represent a quiet prayer for peace.

Past and present merge when friends and family gather round to remember Vera as the hero not only she once was, but the hero she will always be. According to local tradition, the body is rest in the grave of the parents. Vera now rests with her mother, Vena.
