As part of the tradition, people hold lit candles during the funeral ceremony, carefully keeping them from being blown out, until they burn on their own. Candles symbolize the soul of the dead and represent a quiet prayer for peace.

Vera Foteva is one of the greatest Macedonian partisans from the Second World War. Having lived through battles, imprisonments, beatings, deportation in Siberia, etc, she died at the age of 85. Her funeral was a traditional orthodox ceremony that attended many of her family members, friends and a few of the last remaining living partisans. Her best friend and fellow partisan from the old days sobbed at the coffin for over an hour.
