The prison has been open as a tourist attraction since 1992, one year after it closed as Western Australia's biggest maximum security prison. Bear in mind it is right in the heart of the town, across the street from nice homes and quiet streets, and was 130 years old at the time. It is a wildly popular tourist attraction these days.
