This gentleman selling isso vadai (prawn patty) didn’t wish to share his name. The authorities have been intermittently cracking down on pavement hawkers, forcing them away from their regular places of business; he was understandably paranoid about a guy with a camera.

Sunny Sri Lankan afternoons mean that Tillekeratne usually sells most of his King Coconuts. The fruits come from a tree in his own garden and sell at about Rs. 40(US$ 0.32) a fruit.

Gunasiri, the painter, was initially reluctant to let me take his picture, for fear the designs would be copied. Gunasiri, as well as several other artists, display their work along Green Path in Colombo. On some days he goes home with close to Rs. 10,000 (US$80) and on other days with nothing.
