Day 47: Dinosaurs

USA | Saturday, 24 January 2015 | Views [205]

Today was all about the giants. Just out of Arcata lies a world, somewhat unchanged for millions of years. The Redwood trees have existed in coastal California since dinosaurs roamed the earth (some of them 2000 years). The 12 mile hike (James and Miners Ridge, Prairie Creek loop) allows you to venture deep into the lush rainforest, winding down, up and around the huge trees, gaining a sense of their immensity. Big Tree is possibly the biggest and oldest in the area, with a circumference of 20mtrs and a height of 92mtrs high. Fern Canyon boasts ancient species whose ancestry can be traced back 325 million years. Parts of Jurassic Park 2 were even filmed there. Now our adopted dog, Mocha is snoring on the lounge.
