Note that the jeepney´s body design is taken from the American military jeep, its engine and parts are taken from discarded Japanese trucks, and its interiors are adorned with religious images --- influences from nations that occupied the Philippines in the past. (Spain, US, and Japan)

Passengers of all ages climb aboard the jeepney. The woman wearing a hat, standing behind the jeepney doubles as a fare collector and a barker.

Heir to the jeepney as ¨king of the Philippine road¨ are tricycles, which are quite similar to the tuktuks of Thailand. Some tricycles, like the one in the picture, could accommodate --- sardine-in-a-can-like --- eight passengers. Here, the driver takes a power nap in his cab, under the blistering heat of the sun --- this is truly a life on the road.
