Katikati ‘again’

NEW ZEALAND | Monday, 4 February 2008 | Views [668]

We enjoyed our short stay here last time, so we thought as we were only passing a few Km’s south we would detour; so after booking the van in for a service we were heading to the Avocado Orchard again.  We stayed here for only 2 nights before heading to a small hostel just North of Katikati on the main route, in a very small town called Karagahake.  This town was a huge area of Gold mining activity at the turn 19th century, and in a little under a 100 years is now almost deserted.  Yet the amazing thing is that, most of the foundations and tunnels still exist from the Gold mine buildings and work carried out.  We only had one night here, but that was enough to help us decide to return later and explore in more detail the walks that around this tiny area, and we’ll fill you in about this place on that trip.  We were now heading to Rotorua, we were warned about the ‘smells’
