A couple of older schoolgirls return to their studies at the National Mosque, built in 1965 as a symbol of the country’s recently won independence.

The National Mosque’s architecture exemplifies order and symmetry. It also is immaculately clean; shoes must be removed before entering and tourists may only enter at certain times of day.

Regardless of religious background, every female who enters the National Mosque must be totally covered except for her hands, feet, and face.
