The Unseen Afghanistan

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Waiters serve dinner at a wedding held at a wedding hall in Kabul. Typically men and women are seated in different rooms. There are musical performers so that guests can dance. Afghan weddings are elaborate, lasting 3 to 7 days, hosting a range of 600 to 2,000 guests daily. An average of about $20,000 is spent by the groom on the celebration and dowry, normally leaving the groom in debt. Laws enforcing a budget on weddings have been proposed in Parliament.
