Greetings from Taupo! I'm writing a bit earlier today (5 p.m. here Tuesday ~ midnight over there?) because it is rainy and unfortunately Casper was right - this place is pretty boring if the weather is bad. It was a mostly sunny day when I woke up in Auckland this morning, which I took to be a good sign, but then on the drive to Taupo it got cloudier and rainier... and then very sunny, and then back to cloudy again once I reached the city. And it is colder my friends, but I don't mind because if it's sunny and warm here it doesn't feel like New Zealand to me. Plus I get to break out my beanie again - yay! I got one gorgeous picture of a rainbow over Lake Taupo... but then it disappeared after 30 seconds and started getting cloudy again.
Taupo is the skydiving capital of the world, so I'll give you 3 guesses as to what I might be doing tomorrow. ;) This is all dependent on the weather though; if the weather sucks tomorrow, then pretty much any outdoor activities here will be a bust, and I'll pretty much be left with walking around and shopping at the tiny stores here. Even kayaking wouldn't be fun, so I really have no idea what I'll be doing tomorrow.
Tramping the Tongariro Alpine Crossing still looks unlikely because of dangerous conditions, which is disappointing because it's rated as one of the best one-day walks in New Zealand. I can't delay here in Taupo too long though to wait for the weather. I'm planning on moving on to a different city on Thursday and just hope that at least something outdoorsy goes according to plan. Sorry that I have no interesting stories today - just hanging out at an internet lounge right now, but we'll see how tomorrow goes!
