A condor is captured in the nearby mountains several days leading up to the event. On the day of the event, the condor is blessed and paraded around the makeshift ring for all to see before being attached to a chosen raging bull by villagers.

A professional torero, invited to this unique event held yearly on Peru’s Independence day in the remote village of Cotabambas, begins to bullfight with bulls graciously donated by local villagers. Unlike similar events in Mexico and Spain, no bulls are actually hurt or killed and the event occurs in the town square as opposed to a stadium.

The condor, one of the Gods of the Inca Empire trilogy represents Andean culture. Conversely, the bull represents the invading Spaniards. The ceremonial event is steeped in tradition and symbolic especially for indeginous Peruvians.
