Bohol is well-known as a place of beauty, but not the kind one merely admires from a distance. Bohol is a place of immersive adventure, where beauty and danger are two sides of the same coin.

When in Bohol, do as the Boholanos do. The slow-paced, islander culture at Bohol beaches encourages one to get lost and enjoy its simple beauty. I took the advice of these two dogs enjoying a morning swim, and spent my day at Alona beach, Panglao Island in Bohol.

On my final day at Bohol, I took a short trip to Balicasag Island. What struck me more than the fishes or the turtles was this fisherman doing his daily grind. Surrounded by what we call “paradise,” he instead is struggling to make a living for his family. According to 2013 poll conducted by Holy Name University (HNU) Research Center, about 66 percent of Boholanos are still suffering from poverty this year. Bohol might very well be paradise, but paradise itself is relative.
