Awoke this morning in Toulon, France. After a leisurely breakfast in Horizons we ventured off the ship. We have been selective in the tours we have booked, as to book a tour in every port would be massively expensive. In US dollars too?
Jeannette had found a cable car ride she wanted to do on Trip Advsor so we left the ship and found a local bus. The ride into town was nearly an hour despite not being that far (but beyond walking distance). Some of the areas we traveled through were slums, and reminded Col and Scott of parts of Marseilles when you leave the tourist areas. We gained the impression there was high unemployment in the city judging by the people on the bus and graffiti in the areas we passed. 2 young guys got done for fare evasion and we had to hand over our tickets that we had purchased on the bus but hadn't validated. Stupid bloody tourists! Walked up the hill and managed to find the cable car. The ride and views were great, much higher than a ski lift as we saw the ground disappear beneath us passing over a chasm.
Our return on the bus was much quicker and we made it back on board for a very late lunch. Drinks on our balcony once again before Col toddled off to her acupuncture appointment. Greg and Jeannette are making full use of the gym facilities as Greg is running in the Berlin marathon on 27 September. At our 8.15 appointed time for dinner it's off to the restaurant. The 4 of us are seated on the same table, set for 6, where our dining companions are once again Karen and John. They are from Charlotte, North Carolina and prove to be excellent company. The menu changes nightly and the food is spectacular. It's only day 2, but Scott is already concerned about his weight! There is a different show each night in the Princess theatre at 10.15 and tonight was a musical review featuring songs by Billy Joel, Elton John and Barry Manilow.
