Living Off the Sea in Essaouira

Just up the jetty from the crab fisher was a man sorting his belongings into crates. What interests me most about this image is not the man but the animals. A dog and a cat were having a stand-off while two other cats watch on from relative safety among the boxes.

This man was bagging his catch of crabs into thin plastic bags. Most of the crabs were very much still alive. The crab seen in the unattended bag was trying to make its escape while its captor loaded the remaining catch.

A group of men fix their fishing nets on the harbour. In the background the small blue boats are outnumbered by the larger commercial trawlers. It’s clear that this town is heavily reliant on the livelihood provided by the sea despite the fact tourists flock to this town which is famous for its wind and kite surfing opportunities.
