Day 16: First Day at the Orphanage

KENYA | Wednesday, 6 March 2013 | Views [190]

This morning I went with some fellow volunteers to the school/orphanage where I intend to spend my time for the next month. Having not seen an orphanage yet, it was very different from what I was expecting. In fact, it was almost the same as Damside school, except with 3 extra rooms for dormitories. The children sleep anywhere from 2 – 4 to a bed. I spent the morning just getting to know a few of the children. Since school is not in session due to the elections, many of the children had left, or were planning to leave, to go stay with relatives until the 7th. When there is no school, the children have free reign in the orphanage. However, they loved having volunteers there, to read to them and to play with them. What I found very exciting was that they had a library! Damside was so small, there wasn’t even enough room to implement one, like I had planned. The library at the orphanage, though, is definitely in need of some TLC!
