Landslides are common, sudden, and may hinder the communication for hours. However, maintaining the road clear is essential: the Siachen sector of Ladakh, close the the Pakistani and Chinese borders and it was theater of indo-pakistan skirmishes from 1984 to 2003. Most of the roads are especially maintained to grant the mobility of the indian army in case of emergency.

The road to the mountain passes are dangerous and very narrow, often without asphalt, guardrails or protection from falling rocks . Reduced speed, extensive use of horn and lightning reflexes, are imperative in each blind turn to avoid the frequent
