Landslides are common, sudden, and may hinder the communication for hours. However, maintaining the road clear is essential: the Siachen sector of Ladakh, close the the Pakistani and Chinese borders and it was theater of indo-pakistan skirmishes from 1984 to 2003. Most of the roads are especially maintained to grant the mobility of the indian army in case of emergency.
