My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Lesotho | Friday, July 5, 2013 | 5 photos

I am Carmel and, today, I turned 27 years old. So far, life presented me with special moments in different corners of the world.

In 2011, I left my Brazilian home to set foot in South Africa. In the suitcase, a degree in Film and Video; in the backpack, lots of experience as a Photo Assistant; in my purse, plenty of space for a Camera and new adventures.

Along this two-year journey, Africa surprised me with a new passion: portraits. I met inspiring minds, revealing strong characters through my lenses, registered not only in a digital sensor but also in my life story. I got invited to people's homes, villages, stories and, for short periods of time, I was part of someone’s life. I believe photographs are only part of the story, that is, the part of the story you tell and part of the story of who you are.

Thinking about Travel Photography, I ask myself if I'll leave a destination knowing that I produced an essay of images that fully reveals the essence of a place, portrayed its people and hidden gems. Through a professional photographer's point of view, how does ten days become 20 photographs, what do you focus on? These aspects are my motivation to be in this scholarship.
