Portrait of the old Herd Boy, while he takes a break from watching his cattle grazing.

The Herd Boy is a distinctive feature of Basotho society. They carry a cane when they take the cattle grazing. The cane has a unique decoration, that represents the family they belong to, which literally serves as an ID book.

The cultural and social traditions of the community have been maintained rather untouched throughout the years, being passed on for generations, enabling them to be found still so incredibly vivid in the 21st Century World.

This Basotho young man poses next to his improvised shack.
Inside, there is only space for a long banch and wood stove, to help keep him warm through out the day.
He is also a cattle herder and he is wearing a blanket, that he did the embroidering himself.
