Like most people I meet, I tend fall into ruts. I think this is the best job I’ll ever get, or don’t leave a job because the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t. I acquire tunnel vision based on my choices in friends, entertainment, and the news I subscribe to. I feel comfortable in my own microcosm.
I believe we have all engineered our own realities to fit our personalities. This behavior is safe, but it is also isolating. The long-term effect is closing oneself off from new ideas and feeling less connected with the world at large. The older I get the more I feel this is true.
When I travel, I’m relaxed, happy, and outside of my element. It is during this time when I am most open to the new. I’m not trying to meet a deadline, stressing about my finances, or worrying about what kind of a world my son will inherit. Traveling is about possibility. It means new experiences, new people, and new ideas. Travel makes me feel connected with humanity on the macro scale. The older I get, the more I find I need perspective. Life keeps getting faster and it’s easy to fall into my own personal dogma.
