Many other elders are forced to walk through the city all day long looking for bottles, plastic containers and cardboard boxes. They roam for hours carrying heavy bags in hopes of collecting enough material to sell for recycling.

Elders who don’t receive pensions or financial aid from their families usually end up on the street. Some sell candies and sodas at Lima’s two main plazas. If elders must be on the street, this is probably the best place to earn a living.

The last resort is to spend the last years of their lives sitting on the street – regardless of the too-hot, too-cold or too-humid weather – hoping for the generosity of strangers.
