My Scholarship entry - No culture without traditions

Canada | Monday, November 24, 2014 | 5 photos

I have always believed that there is a story behind every picture. Funny anecdotes, love stories and sorrowful tales are all held inside photos; eagerly waiting for someone interested in hearing about them. That is to me the power of photography. Some of my fondest memories come from family meetings in which my relatives gathered around photo albums and reminiscenced about the past. It was impossible not to be charmed by their stories.

I started taking photographs when I started travelling around my home country, Peru. Photos allowed me to show my family and friends how the places I visited looked like, what the culture there was like. When I realized that telling stories was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, I quit my job as an engineer and moved to Canada to study journalism. While in Canada, photographs again came to my aid every time I wanted to tell someone about my new home.

Becoming a World Nomads scholar would help me achieve my goal of telling stories about Peru and its people to the world. Even though I’ve spent the past two years in Canada, a part of me never left my home country.
