My photo scholarship entry 2010

Malta | Saturday, August 28, 2010 | 5 photos

The village feasts have been celebrated for centuries. They are part of the Maltese archipelago folklore. This set of photos portray the hardship of a small group of men who dedicate most of their private time all year round to organize and prepare for the annual feast. It shows the transportation and preparation to fire the fruit of their year round sacrifices in order to please the big crowds of people from the islands and abroad, who visit the old village of Zurrieq on the eve of the celebrations in order to assist to one of the most spectacular pyrotechnic shows on the island.

Pyrotechnic enthusiasts from different villages and also competitors from countries like Italy and China also compete against each other in an annual pyrotechnic festival where in 2007, the Mount Carmel Fireworks factory, the one presented in these photos were the winners of these festivals in different categories.

This set of photos is dedicated to my father who is one of the men who dedicate his time to create these flowers of fire in the skies for the enjoyment of others. It is worthwhile mentioning that these men do all this work voluntary without any form of payment. My father has been there working for the feast since his childhood. Unfortunately this July he could not be there in the fields with his comrades even though his 60 bombshells were ready by mid May since he suffered a stroke. Concerned about the danger involved in producing these fireworks, my father has always kept me away from the factory knowing that one could easily become addicted to such an art, except to allow me to take photographs appreciating_that_I_am_a photography enthusiast since when I was_a_young_boy.

Hopefully_through_these_photo_memoirs,_I_would_get_the_chance_to_get_back_into the_fields_by_the_end_of_year_thanks_to_WorldNomads.com.

Pyrotechnic enthusiasts create art through fire whilst we photography devotees recount stories through our viewfinders.
