Well planned burn regimes keep dense undergrowth from accumulating, which in turn replenishes soil nutrients with ash.

Back-burning is a common forestry practice to prevent larger and more dangerous wildfires. These firefighters have just arrived on scene and are creating a plan of action to keep the blaze under control.

A bush is engulfed in flame and burning leaves rise into the sky. Control burns are only practiced under low wind conditions so stray sparks do not ignite unintended country or residential areas.
