Day 2 - Hostel in Ljubljana is very nice, had a lazy morning chating with other guests, due to the rain today I spent some time getting info on the best way to get to the Postojnska-Jama Caves. Got info I needed & some company for the day as well, Tarena, a high school science teacher from Melbourne. So many Aussies over here !
We missed the 11.00 bus so we walked around Ljubljana for a few hours till the train to the caves was due. Took a cab up to the castle on the hill, I'm sure the view is normally very nice but with the weather misbehaving couldn't see much. I have been very lucky, till now, with the weather, so I can't really complain, a good day to go under ground.
Arrived at the caves in plenty of time for the last tour of the day. Caught a cute little train into the heart of caves. At some points the tunnels were very low & the train went quite fast, for someone of my height did quite a bit of relex ducking. the train came to a halt & we all assembled next to signs of our spoken languge for a guided tour of the main tunnels & caverns. This place is HUGE ! much bigger & more impressive than I had imagined. The tour was for an hour or so ending in a cavern called the concert Hall. Yes, they actually have concerts here.
During the tour we met an American from Kansas City working in Slovenia for a week, he was kind enough to offer us a lift back to town saving us 2 hours of travel time. Excellent !
Had a quiet evening planning the next phase of my trip, back to Croatia, Split & Dubrovnik, with side trips to some Islands & a day trip to Mostar & Sarajevo.
