Well, one theory has it that the architecture ensured people could not actually see the top from the bottom, and that they would be in a semi-prone position as they climbed - an appropriate position to pay respect to the gods.

The secret in ascending is to climb the stairs diagonally from side to side. Descending? Get behind a really big guy who can stop you from tumbling to the bottom!

We were joking later about how lucky we are not to have pyramids and the like in Canada, the US, the UK, etc...we'd have to have wheelchair ramps, caution signs, everywhere, signed waivers to acknowledge the danger, protective railings, etc, etc, etc. And even then...
