    It's said, among Lithuanians, that if you travel to Nida then you are expected by your friends and family to bring back smoked fish. In the small town the fish is caught, smoked and available for purchase; it only takes a day for the fish swimming in the sea to become a fish smoked and on your plate. *The image is of fish being smoked in a backyard smoker for private consumption. by: borderinghaapsalu Views[497] Fishing is a way of life for the locals, all year round and on both sides of the 'Spit. *This image is of locals fishing in the Baltic Sea. by: borderinghaapsalu Views[435] Soviet-era weather stations can be seen along the sea-side beaches of Nida, still providing information to the local fisherman looking to practice their trade and tourists headed to tan. * the image is of one of those Soviet built weather stations. by: borderinghaapsalu Views[598] When the boats become locked in by ice, fishermen in Nida carry on by building ice-fishing shanties and catching smelt by the boatload. * The photo is of one of the boats docked in the lagoon shortly after the ice has receded in the spring. by: borderinghaapsalu Views[499] Lithuanians have a myth that the Curonian Spit was created by a giantess named Neringa who was playing on the seashore as a child. The landmass is isolated by the Baltic Sea, Curonian Lagoon and Russian Federation. Nida is the focal point of the 'Spit; a town Flocked to by, up to, a hundred thousand tourists in the summer and populated by about fifteen hundred locals in the winter. on the outskirts of the town are the Dunes which have the aesthetic feel of a stereotypical desert. *The image is of the Parnidis Dune which continuously threatened the village, with drifting sand, until the village was moved farther away, to its current position, in the 1730s.
