Walking along the unpaved roads and uncut grass of this impoverished neighborhood, it is not uncommon to see children playing and laughing with their friends.

El Oasis, with a population of 5000, is one of hundreds of neighborhoods in the slums of Bogota, Colombia. Every year the city receives waves of internally displaced Colombians as a result of the violent conflict between the guerrillas, the paramilitary and the Colombian Army.

Petrona is originally from Choco, the poorest and one of the most dangerous regions in the country. Like thousands of other Chocoanos, Petrona and her family settled in Bogota. Far from her native Choco, Petrona engages other Afro Colombians in her community to celebrate their rich culture and traditions.
