Day 1, Welcome to Japan

Awwww

Awwww

Well, we made it, the first leg of our journey!  I have to say that I am very proud of myself.  I did not lose my temper or get bratty towards Kyle in the final prep days leading up to the trip.  We got the house all set for Bryan, treated our clothes with permetherin, and just basically made sure everything was all ready.  And I was nice and kind the whole time!  At 2am the night before our flight I suggested that we leave the rest for morning, and sleep for a few hours.  So Kyle set the alarm for 4am, and we went to sleep.  When I woke up it seemed way too bright to be before 4am, I checked the clock and sure enough it was 6am!!!  My mom was supposed to be there at 6:15am to bring us to the airport, and our bags were still empty!  I jumped out of bed, screamed to Kyle “Oh my god it is 6am!”  He jumped up and started rushing around.  Twice I thought I was going to throw up, and then I realized it someday when we make it to the Amazing Race I am going to be a mess of unwanted bodily functions.  Long story short, we both showered, packed our bags, finalized the house stuff, Ma Buff stripped and remade the bad, and we were out the door a little after 6:40am!  We made it to the airport with plenty of time!  And surprisingly we only forgot a few things, and they weren’t even that important.

Kyle got bumped to first class from MSP to Chicago, there was mix up with our seats.  Both flights were really not that bad, although the last time Kyle traveled to Japan it took him 3 weeks in a submarine!  This was the longest flight Kyle had ever taken, and he commented on never having watched so many movies in a row (5 movies).  He didn’t sleep at all!  I slept for about 3 hours.

So we made it here, and we had high hopes of taking a train from our hotel in Narita to Tokyo for dinner, and staying awake as long as we could to help with the jet lag.  Well unknown to me the hotel I booked it about 2 hours away from Tokyo, who knew the main Tokyo airport was so far away from Tokyo?!  We settled for taking a shuttle bus into Narita for dinner, and it was a good thing we did, even before we started eating Kyle and I were dragging.  We had grilled eel over rice, it came with some pickled veggies, my favorite, and some soup.  The whole time we were eating I kept commenting on the soup and how I was having trouble eating it because there was a creature in it.  Kyle never asked me about it, so I assumed his soup had a creature in it too.  Finally when I told him he could have the rest of my soup because I couldn’t get past the creature, he told me his soup didn’t have a creature in it, I fished it out with my chopsticks and plopped it in his soup, Kyle tried a bite of it and decided that it could have been the eels liver or something, but he didn’t eat anymore of the creature.

After dinner and finally making it back to our hotel, after waiting in the rain for the shuttle bus for about 45 minutes, we went straight to bed before 8pm Japan time, so now it is 4:30am and I can’t sleep, now having rested for 8 full hours.  Kyle is of course sound asleep next to me. I am excited for our travels today to Takayama, and more yummy food, minus the creature.

Oh and I am sure if he were awake he would make fun of me for how long this entry is considering it is only the first day, and not all that much has happened!  He will give me a hard time for over-writing just as I had given him a hard time about already video taping the temple we checked out before dinner, he got great shots of turtles in a pond and statues on a hill, amazing content!!  I am sure you will all be so excited to sit through our videos when we get home!!!
