There is always something burning in the places I've visited, so I wasn't  surprised when I smelled smoke.  But then I saw these things burning in the street in front of a temple.  I asked a couple what these were for and they told me it was a goddess's birthday.  There were hundreds of candles lit inside the small temple as well.
