Alys and Jess Tour Europe

The April Countdown Begins

USA | Wednesday, 2 April 2008 | Views [717] | Comments [5]

Today is April Fools day, the 1st of April which means that we have officially entered the month in which Alys and I will depart for our grand adventure traversing (I know this word is generally used when describing what one might do on a glacier, but I like the sound of it) around Europe. Alys has been doing some phenomenal research for the trip as the countdown nears to April 29th. In particular she has discovered the array of European music festivals that will happen all throughout the summer and has systematically begun contacting them (using friends who speak fluent Spanish at times to write the emails) about the volunteer opportunities that are available to us in exchange for admission tickets. We both love the idea of being music festival groupies and in turn have decided to take my small but cozy, two person tent so that we may have shelter wherever we may land. A tent is absolutely imperative if one wants to be a music festival groupie. I have also entertained the idea of bringing along a guitar so I could earn us our keep on sidewalks, but that option was nixed pretty quickly when we both realized that we could get an old guitar in Europe if we really wanted to. So instead of a guitar I have suggested a harmonica, accordion, tape recorder, or small piano. So far the harmonica is taking the lead.

The not so fun part of planning a trip for me is, well, the planning. In particular the planning one has to do before a trip begins. That is why I can not reiterate enough how wondrous it is to have a travel partner who likes to plan. Who actually finds joy in logistics. In fact logistics are on of Alys’s many talents and I am strongly urging her to explore this love. For example, figuring out our insurance policy, and what to pack down to the smallest detail. I on the other hand am wondering what I am going to do with my awful cell phone plan and considering blackmailing the phone company for all their vindictive clauses. That is the last of the major items on my “to do list” apart from the “actual packing bit” and then the “actual getting on the plane and going” bit.

So if you are interested in checking up on Alys and I every so often to see where we are and what we might be doing, we plan to update this page weekly with news and photos. If any of you have words of wisdom, or just words, to pass along much are appreciated and you can either post those here or send Alys or I a direct email.

Hola Jess! I love that you guys are going to be music festival groupies! It makes me think of something that would happen in a Jack Kerouac novel. Hope you're super jazzed right now for all the adventures that lie ahead. I'll keep checking this site to see if there's a chance we can cross paths over here. Ciao!

Alys and Jess. Jess and Alys. Alys and Jess. I'm not sure which way fits better, you'll have to decide of course, it's one of those important and essential pre-trip decisions. Or you could go with nick-names, like Tom and Jerry, or Bill and Ted. Personally, I would go with fire and air, something mystical you know. So that when you introduce yourself to people they will say, "hey, these chicks are mystical" (they still say chicks in Europe). Once you have settled on your names and their order, you should really put some consideration in to your outfits. Now, typically people tend to travel in a standard outfit and this really is a no no. You see Europeans are very fashion conscious and frankly the Kharki is very out these days. If you really want to look good and be taken seriously then you should purchase some super-hero outfits, they really are all the rage this year.
Looks like I just saved your trip.

Hi Alys
Almost time for you to come home now so I will give you some words of wisdom. Now you will really appreciate your Mom and Dad....even Emma......and of course, Dawn.
So happy you seem to still be in one piece and I hope cherishing a lot of wonderful memories. You probably will never have this much freedom again in your life. Personally, I never had it but life is different now.
Your parents are coming to visit me for Thanksgiving and I hope you will be able to come too. My life has been turned upside down in the past year but I am happy, busy, and adjusting to life in Texas.
I have met so many wonderful women here but they are all old just like me. We share so much of the world we grew up in no matter what state we are from. I have a baseball pal from Chicago...he looked me up the minute I arrived even though he is a Cubs fan. It is so odd here...women know nothing about baseball...so he was so happy to find a woman who knows what the game is all about and such an avid fan.
This Saturday we are supposed to go to the racetrack and I am looking forward to that. However, a hurricane is heading this way so the horses might be swimming instead of running. There is always something going on here...no reason to be bored.
My best friend is Rita, a woman from New York...we have dinner together and then go out and sit on our veranda...so peaceful and quiet and we just relax there. So odd, no one else uses this veranda so we call it ours and are going to carve our initials in the posts someday. (Not now...we would be kicked out...have to wait until we are ready to depart)
As your Papa used to say to our kids (Watch your step).....come home safe and healthy.
Love You Nanny
