The whole city of Varanasi is a gigantic bazaar – everyone is peddling something. This little girl was making “donas” – bunches of marigold and roses with an earthen lamp, all arranged in a leafy bowl.

This time, the tourist said NO to the kid's offer. “You broke my heart, sir!” the boy says . If you just decide to give money to the children, they give you a puzzled look that makes you realize that to save their fragile dignity you must accept a little something of what they are selling.

“Hello, madam, hello! You buy this to remember your father, your mother, your brother, your sister. I have fire. You put in the water…” her brother pitches. “Only five Rupee,” he recites what seems to be the mantra for Varanasi’s omnipresent invisible children.
