My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

India | Thursday, January 10, 2013 | 5 photos

It took me 22 years, one university degree, and a 25,000 nautical mile journey to finally pursue my life long dream of becoming a travel journalist. For a long time I struggled between choosing a career of stability and one of purpose. The four months I spent studying and traveling aboard a ship through the program Semester at Sea ultimately made me choose the latter. Returning home and sharing my photos and stories with others made me realize that I wanted to tell stories for a living - and I believe photography is one of the best ways to do so. I enrolled in journalism school the following year and will graduate this spring. While I enjoy all types of photography, I'm most passionate about taking pictures of people. I'm driven by photos that act as a window into the soul of the subject and produce an emotional response. Through this scholarship I hope to learn what it takes to produce these types of photographs. I can't imagine a more important region of the world to visit at this moment in history than the Arab Peninsula. I would be so honored to be along for this adventure and to be able to share Oman's stories with others through the art of photography.
