Varanasi is considered the holiest city for those of the Hindu faith. Every morning, thousands of people travel from across the country to take part in religious ceremonies on the banks of the river.

It is sunrise on the banks of the Ganges River in Varanasi, India. Rays of light push through the hot, heavy fog as people make their way to the sacred river for morning prayer.

An elderly man washes himself in the river despite the fact it is heavily polluted. Bathing in the Ganges is a way to both purify the soul and pay homage to ancestors, whose ashes are often poured in its waters.
