The Long & Winding Road

Khao Phanom Bencha National Park

THAILAND | Monday, 10 November 2008 | Views [401]

Today we decided to rent scooters and drive to Khao Phanom Bencha National Park. It was about 25km north of Krabi.  It was a cool drive through the countryside with mountains all around.  We decided to hike the nature trail all around the park.  It was a pretty tough trek but really cool rainforest withlots of waterfalls.  Right when we got to the viewpoint at the peak of the park, it started raining so hard.  So our descent to the bottom was pretty sketchy and wet.  The funny part was that Will had thrown his only pair of shoes out after the last trek so he did the whole park in flip flops or barefeet.  I give him credit though cuz it was a tough hike for me and I had hiking shoes on.  I took my shoes off at the bottom and discovered a blood spot on my sock and a leech sucking away at my ankle.  It was pretty gross, I actually had another leech in the other shoe but he hadn't started sucking yet.  We drove the 25km back to the hotel in monsoon like rains, and we stopped in at some caves where some Thai kids took us on a free guided tour crawling through tiny openings into big underground caverns.  I think they just hung out in the caves so they could smoke cigarettes without their parents seeing.  They were probably 12 years old.  At night we checked out a couple bars in Krabi town and ended the night watching a band at a pizzeria.  Really fun day though!
