The Long & Winding Road

The Temples Of Angkor

CAMBODIA | Saturday, 20 December 2008 | Views [753]

Today we got picked up at 9am to begin our three days of temple gazing.  Our first stop was Bayon which was really impressive with all of the smiling faces carved into all of its towers.  We saw a lot of really cool temples today but my favourite was Ta Prohm.  It wasn't found until well after most of the others in the area so the jungle has grown right into the temple walls.  You've probably seen the pictures or Tomb Raider but seeing it in person is quite incredible.  The last temple of the day was the massive Angkor Wat which you reallt can't even describe with words.  The moat around it is just huge and makes you feel pretty excited just crossing it to get onto the grounds.  The actual temple is just huge and is a wonder of ancient architecture.  Living in Canada where everything is only around 100 years old at the most makes it seem even crazier that these temples were built around 800-1000 years ago.  Very impressive though, a lot of hard work went into consructing this massive structure.  It was definitely one of the highlights of my trip so far!  I tried some really good Khmer food for dinner.  It was fish in curry with rice and was really tasty.  Even though Thai food gets all the hype, Khmer food is just as tasty.  We went out at night for some pool and 50c Angkor drafts.  Had a good night!
