In January, Walid Rashid joined National Geographic photographer, Jason Edwards, on assignment in South Africa as the winner of our 2011 Travel Photography Scholarship.
They embarked on an 8-day trip with G Adventures, to photograph the wildlife and landscape of South Africa, which included lots of early mornings and late nights in the game reserves to capture the action. Flooded conditions in Kruger National Park (thanks to a monsoon in Mozambique) only added to the adventure as the team got to hop in a chopper and take some amazing aerial shots. Needless to say, Walid got a taste of what it is really like to be on assignment as a National Geographic photographer!
Walid on his experience...
"Being mentored by National Geographic Photographer Jason Edwards for 8 days was a rewarding experience. Delving into the daily life of a professional photographer with 25 years of experience in the field has reshaped my approach to photography. Apart from the advanced technicalities of camera handling, which every enthusiastic photographer should master, I learned to find a frame in almost every scene and to always keep shooting since you learn something new with every photo you take.
My experience in South Africa with the World Nomads & National Geographic Channel Travel Photography Scholarship was beyond my expectations; from enjoying the beautiful scenery and breathtaking landscapes, to tracking wildlife in the vast open African savannas, to riding in a rescue helicopter as part of the aerial documentation of the recent floods and visiting some rural villages in Cape Town. In short it was a trip of a lifetime."
Here is a selection of photos taken by Walid that will be featured on National Geographic Channel's website!
