I was at a rooftop cafe and I ordered a club soda. I was the only customer and woman there. I went over to the balcony to take pictures while I waited. This is what I found when I came back from that- the soda, and a glass with a little juice at the bottom. Looked recently drunk out of. Hmm. I didn't touch the glass, but photographed it for your viewing pleasure.
Lessons learned or re-learned on day 2:
1. "Common sense" is relative. (See attached photograph)
2. The smart ass who is harassing you outside of the zigzag alleyway that leads to your hostel will harass you upon coming and going. When you cant remember which alleyway is yours and you're pretending not to look lost, he'll open his big mouth and offer comforting confirmation you have correctly found your way back, though he will have no idea he is doing anything other than yelling at you about your scarf. You will then find your hostel and collapse on your bed from heat exhaustion after being outside 20 minutes because you covered up head to toe in attempt to avoid harassment. (as if any of us women really need further evidence that nothing you wear can prevent it)
3a. Sometimes it looks like all the bicycles, cabs and rickshaws are coming at you on purpose until you remind yourself how many of them there are and how little space there is. B. Honking is constant for reasons of communication and strategy, not angry like it would be in the u.s. C. You will get used to motorized vehicles and bicycles flying toward you.
