Yemen Before the Storm These photos were taken in 1999 before the bombing of the USS Cole Battleship in the port of Aden in Yemen, as well as before the tragedy at the World Trade Center in New York. Yemen at this time was a beautiful and welcoming place.

A momentary reflection of a traditional Yemeni towerhouse and it's political posters in a puddle over the cobblestones. Political posters of President Saleh can be seen, a man whose own world would be turned upside down during the Arab Spring.

A villager enters a tiny shaft of sun that cuts through the tiny streets of the old Medina. This image could be seen as an homage to the surrealist painter De Chirico and his solitary figures set in strange and perhaps foreboding urban landscapes.

Sun sets on the last house of the village, high in the Hajaz mountains. Other tiny villages sit precariously on faraway ridges. These remote outposts offer protection from the rapid changes in the Arab world. Whether this a good or bad thing remains to be seen.
