A village with a secret marathon

The most unbelievable moment of the journey was an unexpected ‘Village Marathon.’ Around 40 young self-trained rural athletes under 12 years of age, came dashing up our trekking path, oozing gallons of energy in every stride. We were speechless when it dawned on us that their bare feet and sharp stones enroute did not deter their indomitable spirit one bit.

The village was adorned with Jackfruits, the largest tree-borne fruits in the world. I discover that the wood from these trees are used to make the traditional musical instrument of India, the Veena. The Nature’s music that filled every ounce of the village and its forests, reinforced the symbolic power of this majestic tree.

The ‘Village Marathon’ reignited our sore limbs to pace up the rest of our trek that culminated in Swami Malai, the abode of Lord Shiva, 4338 ft above sea level. The spectacular view from the top, as seen through the Trishool (Lord Shiva’s weapon), which stands fearless and reaches out to the skies, carrying in its fold, every magical essence of Yelagiri. Truly, on top of the world.
